Record lightning strikes hit Hong Kong yesterday in its most violent electrical storm, which caused flooding and left several people trapped in lifts.
The Hong Kong Observatory reported 13,102 bolts of lightning across the city in the hour after midnight - the most since such data was first collected in 2005.
More than 40mm of rain an hour was recorded across the territory during the storm, which raged from 9pm on Wednesday to 4am yesterday. The weather was linked to Tropical Storm Meranti.
